i'm suddenly feeling sad that this is ending...downloading now...will listen tonight...can't wait to hear what the master caster has in store for us all...

Got a nice call from Den today thanking me for helping out with the cast, to which I could only reply "not at all, THANK YOU!".

Never fear, never fear, we will be in another realm somehow someway, hopefully as good, if not better than what we've done already (hard to imagine however). As I said in 199, it's been the single most cathartic music experience of my life and probably the most important.

Imagine, that kid that hated my frickin guts and had me ousted from the band turned my entire musical career into something more meaningful than I ever thought possible 30 years later, and did it half a country away. I would have bet 1 in a million back in the day. Life is so unpredictable and good!

wow...how cool was that to listen to? and i still find it hard to believe that the band was immortalized in song...

i'd like to thank jba and den for all of their hard work and dedication to this insanity...

and i want some background/explanation of "rev 9" and where it came from...

i gotta get to bed...playing single parent this week while lynn does a little convalescing of her own...6am comes earlier than i'd like it to...

Rev 9 (Revolution 9) is a group called The Shazam. This is from an E.P they put out several years ago called "Rev 9." I thought it was brilliant that they would even attempt to cover that song (is it a song?). Anyway it's LONG out of print but I managed to find it on line.

What did you guys think of "Life Without Dave?" Even in it's unfinished form I think it's the best Dygmies song ever. Gives me the chills everytime I listen to it.

i need to listen again...the first time through, i liked "you deny" better than "dave"...

and don't be so critical of yourself (yeah, right) on "sparkle"...no, it's not the best thing that you've done (in my opinion), but there are some really great moments...if the song achieved nothing more than give you the chance to move on to the next one, it was worth it...and who knows...something from "sparkle", be it a production idea, melody or lyric, may be the next step towards the best song you've ever written...

posted by: matt the bass player on Thu, 10/8 07:48 AM EDT

Sparkle was awesome, loved that song.

How did you manage that Life Without Dave version? You Deny needs more mixing, I am my own worst enemy.

What a cool end to 200 episodes. I am looking forward to the next chapter...

I finally managed the time to listen to 199 this morning and I'm about half way through 200 now. I was putting it off for a number of reasons. First, I wanted to be able to listen uninterrupted and at a decent volume. Neither opportunity presented itself so, as with every other cast, I stop and start, back-up, replay and adjust the volume continuously. Second, I thought it would be cool to listen to the two casts B/B; one from each of our most frequent casters. But mostly I think, because I was reluctant to listen to the "last casts" and not wanting it to end. That probably sounds ridiculous given my lack of involvement but it's true.

Regarding the casts - I think JBA hit a bunch of my favorites. Personal Letters, Twist..., Beyond the great..., To the Heavens, Fly, and my beloved Heart Beat. Den, as always, put together a masterpiece, touching on so many of the things we discussed and shared and still managing to throw in NEW STUFF on this, the last cast. Loved Sparkle & Life w/out Dave.

Otherwise, please let me know how/what/where the next generation of Javelin materializes. I promise to be my usual conservative, non conforming, apathetic and bad grammar self.

Last, my deepest appreciation for including me and keeping me in your thought. I want you all to know that you are very dear to me and I am happy to have shared such a large part of my youth with you all, sorry for the way things went way back when and glad for the opportunity to have seen the circle close as friends.

IPADM sent me "Life Without Dave" and 6 other songs to learn guitar parts for. I imported them into Cakewalk (when I was using a PC) and would record scratch guitar over top of them, email them to IPADM to see what he thought. When I finally went to record I knew exactly what I was going to play. I think it took 8 hours over two days for me to record guitar for 7 songs.

So this version of "Life Without Dave" is the rough mix with my scratch guitar on it. I'd love to hear the final finished version.

    Some Qs for Matt:

Do you have a very high resolution file of the
picture I used on 199? I'd like to make a poster for my studio.......also does anyone have the original pic for 200? Can we get either or both of these in very high resolution scans to make some posters with them?

Also for Matt, can you re-send me the TTT cover?

Finally for Matt, are you interested in doing dinner party and drive me crazy via email?... I thought you might be able to use the jimi cav drummer to get some initial tracks?????

posted by: JBA on Fri, 10/9 05:05 PM EDT

    jba...so many questions...let's see:

the picture for #200 comes from oldin...he has the original...

the picture for #199 comes from me...i have the original photo, but i think RR has the original negative or slide...rubber?

TTT Cover...yes, i can send it...and sorry everyone, i really dropped the ball on getting you all copies...with the economy being what it is, i'm just kinda fucked when it comes to cartridges for the printer, shipping, etc...i'm pretty sure jba can make the .wav files available via the website...and i can email everyone PDF files of the insert...just let me know...

as for "dinner party" and "drive me crazy", sure...i can probably devote some time to knocking them out..."drive me crazy" needs olga to sing it...it's a little too high for me...as for a drummer, i thought i'd start with a drum machine and then we can get a real drummer to lay something down on top of it...i'm sure birdman from jimmy cav would do the live drummer tracks...and what about "for sure"?

    now for some other responses:

rr...i'll make sure that you french kiss all of the band members...i kid, i kid...i don't mean to make light of your appreciation...i think we all have taken away something profound from this, though it's different for each of us...personally, i've gained a new love for making music...without jba's present at our 20th reunion and the podcast, i would have never gotten back into playing in a band...and i certainly need to thank oldin for pointing me in the direction of craigslist, which is how i found volume control, which led to the jimmy cav band...

as for den, tom, mel and marvin (whom i still have not met in person), it's allowed me to reconnect with old comrades in arms...it's great to be able to revisit these relationships as an adult as opposed to a self-indulgent adolescent...everyone has regrets, but this has allowed me to mend those fences and rediscover relationships with some damn good guys...

since i'm starting to tear up and my tequila is almost gone, i'm going to close by repeating what the rest of you have already said...this had been great, but it's run it's course...really looking forward to the next chapter in the javelin saga...

Speaking of Oldin...... where's he been?

For dinner party I'd do no more than a click track for birdman. I'ts your song, but my vision for it was polyrhythmic, very much like "watching the detectives". If you like that idea I'd suggest you both sit down and give that tune a listen and go from there. Anything that sounds "regular/metered" probably wont work as well in my opinion.

"Drive me crazy" would be easier to do with the machine, and if you wanted to tackle "For Sure", I'd love to have a stereo acoustic drum track for it with bass. Just hearing now the version you did with the machine, you could use that to coach birdman very easily.

I might be able to get Olga to come up here and do some tracks too..... also we need to do his song "I'll take the girl". Hell, maybe I should come up to Atlanta and get all the drum tracks with you guys some weekend, for all these songs, and then bring them back here and finish up with Olga. Seems a lot of stuff is worth recording from the missed JBAhole this year.

Ok guys, I'm trying to figure out what to do here. I made the decision to return to electric bass because, frankly, I'm better at it. I've been trying to decide which way I want to go with it. I started by putting the following ad on craigslist: CL Ad

I've gotten several responses, which I kind of expected since bass players are always in high demand. There were some good (and not so good) original bands, but nothing struck a chord. One band was really good, but too young and too heavy. I am going to get together with some guys next week who are my age and want to do old hard rock (Ozzy, Kiss, Priest, etc.).

But the more I think about it, the more I'm thinking I might want to take a different approach. My goal is to play live. I'm not really into recording anymore. And I've never been a song writer, I just put lines to other people's songs. So I'm wondering if I should concentrate more on covers. And if I do, I'm thinking I shouldn't limit myself to a single genre. Columbus is overloaded with classic rock bands. But I don't know if it's too late in the game for me to do that.

    Thoughts? Advice?

posted by: Tom on Fri, 10/16 06:54 AM EDT

well, tom...if you're looking to gig, a cover band is the way to go...keep in mind, i'm speaking from my experience (limited) here in atlanta...there are MANY more places to play as a cover band...original stuff is WAY more fun, but you'll have to sell your own tickets to gigs because you won't get a generic draw like you do in bars...the other strike you have against you (as do i) is that you're OLD...new original music is for the young and telegenic...

that being said, this doesn't mean you can't do both...be it with the same band or two different bands...3 of us in The Racket write and record original stuff, but we do it for the catharsis and the high of the process, not because we're going to play them live and DEFINITELY not because we're hoping the A&R guy sitting at the bar decides he wants to sign us to a deal...

if you're willing to go two nights a week, one night can be for the cover band that gigs, the second night can be for the band that does nothing other than write and record...and in all honesty, once you start gigging with the cover band on a regular basis you won't need to rehearse because the music simply isn't that difficult...

last, just because columbus is 'overloaded with classic rock bands' doesn't mean that you can't grab your share of the market by being a better classic rock band than the rest of them...

posted by: matt the bass player on Fri, 10/16 08:27 AM EDT

I guess there are a couple of reasons behind exploring different genres. I figure that, even playing classic rock, I'll have to resign myself to playing stuff I don't like (Rolling Stones anyone?). And if I'm doing that, I may as well open it up, right? Besides, I might find something more challenging to play, or at least something that will make paying for the extra string on my bass worthwhile. I guess it opens up my market if I can play pop, dance and country as well as rock, right? Only time will tell if it makes me happy though.

posted by: Tom on Fri, 10/16 09:02 AM EDT

Funny Tom... I for one don't like the stones at all, maybe one song "before they make me run". I also hate Arosmith and the dead. However, playing the music would not be as bad as having to listen to it.

I'm not sure I undersand the whole thing though. Do you have to be an "electric player"? or an "acoustic player" only? Why cant you do both?.... and for that matter, play bass sax too.

I wouln't say you are easy to please, especially when it comes to your own criticisim, as such, I suggest you follow EXACTLY what you want to do as you go forward. Don't lie to yourself, or "see how it is for a while"..... you'll wind up quiting. Go with your intial gut.

posted by: JBA on Fri, 10/16 10:44 AM EDT

Being who I am, I never know EXACTLY what I want. I do know that I want to play for an audience. Beyond that, I'm just not certain.

I think with me it comes down to artist vs. musician. I've always wanted to be an artist, but I don't think I've ever achieved that. However, I think I'm capable of being a decent musician.

As for upright vs. electric, the upright has been a constant source of frustration. I quit playing in the orchestra because I couldn't stand to practice it. There was so much that I couldn't work through that eventually I didn't want to look at it anymore. And with jazz, I just don't have it. I know in my head what to do, but I could never get the information to my fingers.

One of the responders to my ad is a guy right here in Pickerington who is basically an anything/everything cover guitarist. I'm going to get together with him to try out different things, see if I can do the "cover band bassist". If I hate it, no harm done.

posted by: Tom on Fri, 10/16 12:19 PM EDT

tom...don't limit yourself to the run of the mill shit...i don't like the stones, the dead, or u2...but i enjoy playing "honky tonk women", for example because it gets the breasticles moving...i'll email you our current song list...sure, there are some cliche songs ("sweet home alabama" anyone?)...we really try to stretch our selections so that they not only challenge us as players, they also challenge the listeners...when you see the lightbulb go on above their heads when you start an atypical song, the give and take of energy begins...think "offtracks" like WMMR used to do every once in a while...

you see, if you WANT to set yourself apart from the norm, you can do it with a little thought...hell, there's a band here in town called Yacht Rock...they play all of the smarmy 70's and 80's pop/dance hits...they started on a lark for a friend's private party...now they get upwards of $3k a gig and have a following of 'yacht heads' who show up wearing clothes you'd see on a sailboat or in a yacht club...they're a friggin' riot...they have a blast, they make great money doing, and no song is off limits...

posted by: matt the bass player on Fri, 10/16 02:34 PM EDT

I own one Stones CD - Some Girls. I can handle a Stones' track now and then but play a block or more and I'm outta there.

Personally, (when I was bar hopping) I enjoyed a cover band that could nail a difficult and relatively obscure tune. Originals are tough to get into in a bar setting because of all the distractions. I'm the type that needs to go around and around with a new tune. I like to believe it's because I tend to focus on one instrument or another and it takes me a while to absorb it all.

Either way Tom, it's like you said...no harm done.

Skynyrd was pretty good. I guess it was sad for me in some ways, but at the same time they did a great tribute. Strange hearing every song note for note but I guess that's what those songs need otherwise it would conflict with the image we have after hearing them 40 thousand times. Gary is not a showman by any means and didn't say a word, I'm not sure why I expected otherwise. I thought I'd leave right when they said "what song is it you want to hear", but my car was blocked in so it was no use. Glad I stayed however, the energy was awsome!

emailed Peter again about setting up wordpress on the website. If we loose this blog and don't have another up quicly it will be my fault. I just cant get the answers I need to date. Let me see what happens this time round and if it doesn't work I'll just get something on another site like blogger or whatever.

I read the article. You can say anything you want but backing it up with facts is a different story. Clearly there is nothing of any substance in that argument. I'd vote for him, just because he's a democrat.

voting strictly along party lines is just closed minded...or lazy...just because a person is a democrat (or republican) doesn't mean they know their ass from a hole in the ground...it doesn't mean that they are worth a shit as a politician...it doesn't mean that they are worth a shit as a person...it doesn't mean they're not liars...it doesn't mean they give a rip about their constituents...

personally, my parents and sister are choking under the rediculous property taxes that they have to pay...that's something that corzine promised he would take care of, but instead the taxes simply got higher...if there's some great morality involved, or a higher purpose, or a noble purpose, he should have opened his mouth and explained why he was mixing a little broken glass in the vaseline...

You're wrong.... Republicans are doo doo heads. Democrats rule!

.... Well, just in case we get shut down here.. I'm actually setting a blog up on blogspot. Working out kinks and we can see if that's good or I'll get wordpress working if I ever hear from Peter.

I tried posting a response yesterday to JBA's voting technique but libsyn wouldn't accept it. I figured we were shut out from further comment. No sense in rehashing it, but the truth is that far too many people approach their right to vote with that mentality. I try to find a legitimate reason for voting one way or another but I admit that those reasons are not based on a whole lot of research on my part. Mostly, on debates and stated positions regarding issues.

Then there are those politicians that are so gifted that can state their position using the words that people key on but in fact have a completely different stance. This is Bary's gift.

hey rr...i though john edwards was "poop head"?

and jba, with the new blog forum, will we be able to post mp3s or links to them? links that will direct them to the javelin website? need to know...want to post the 5 JC&TR studio tracks...

posted by: matt on Thu, 11/5 01:48 PM EST

Yes yes.... I've figured a way to "embed" a .mp3 player on any post and then you reference the song location. So if you are doing an FTP to that folder you made it would be something like "www.javelin-band.com/MattsFolder/Newsong.mp3"... or whatever... I'll explain later.

Seems I'm going to have to invite all of you to the blog first using your email addresses. At that point you have to make your own google account which will use your email. So far I havn't been spamed from this but who knows.....

If you dont' want to make a google account then you cant post on the blog but I could do it for you. Any objections to creating a google account?
